What is a High-Efficiency Furnace?
A high-efficiency furnace is a type of heating system designed to maximize the amount of heat produced from the fuel it consumes while minimizing energy waste. These furnaces, like the Amana AMVM97 are designed to be more efficient than standard or older furnaces, resulting in lower energy consumption and reduced utility bills. Furnaces are rated on a percentage system called AFUE, or Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency.
What is AFUE?
AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, and it measures the efficiency of a furnace or boiler. AFUE is expressed as a percentage and represents the amount of heat produced by the furnace compared to the amount of fuel it consumes over the course of a year. In other words, AFUE tells you how effectively a heating appliance converts fuel into usable heat for your home.
Here's how AFUE works:
An AFUE rating of 90% means that 90% of the fuel consumed by the furnace is converted into heat, while the remaining 10% is lost as waste (typically through combustion gasses or other forms of heat loss).
An AFUE rating of 80% means that 80% of the fuel is converted into heat, with 20% lost as waste.
A higher AFUE rating indicates a more efficient furnace because it wastes less fuel and produces more heat for the same amount of energy input.
AFUE is calculated based on a standardized testing procedure, so it provides a consistent way to compare the efficiency of different heating appliances. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requires manufacturers to display AFUE ratings on furnaces and boilers
