Is Getting My Air Ducts Cleaned Worth It?

Now that summer is upon us, it’s going to start heating up pretty quickly. Your air conditioner is going to start kicking into high gear and blowing whatever is trapped on the inside of your ducts throughout your home.

Although a big part of preventing little particulates from circulating around in your home is changing your air filters on a regular basis, your HVAC system can still get filled with dust, dirt, and allergens over the years. This ends up making your system work harder, and can even drive up energy costs over time.

Want to know if you need to have your ducts cleaned? Here are 3 dead giveaways of dirty air ducts!

Dust

Does it seem like no matter how often you clean, everything is still dusty? If you feel like you’re living in groundhogs day every time you wake up because everything in your house is dusty again…

Here’s your sign.

Dust in a air duct

No matter how clean you keep your home, over the years it's inevitable that you’ll need the ducts cleaned. Everything from dirt and dust to pet dander gets sucked up into the HVAC system and deposited in your ducts. If you look carefully at your vent cover, air supply, or return vents and they are visibly dusty - It’s probably time to call one of the professionals at GMC Heating and Cooling to come to take a look.

Your Home was Just Built or has Undergone a Major Renovation.

Demolition and construction can be a real dust storm. Even when contractors bring their shop-vac with them everywhere they go, it’s impossible to keep dust and debris from making their way into the HVAC system unless it’s off and covered throughout the entire construction process.

That’s not usually super practical when you’re trying to work on re-tiling a bathroom in the middle of summer with no AC…

So needless to say, probably a good idea to get them checked after new construction or a remodel.

Rising Energy Costs

If you’ve made it past the constantly dusty furniture, and haven’t cleaned your ducts after 3 or 4 home projects, you’re probably going to wind up driving your energy bill through the roof. Sometimes the ducts can get so full of debris that the airflow is severely reduced. This causes both your heating and cooling portions of the system to work harder.

You might also notice that your bathroom is colder than the Arctic Circle, but another room in your house is hotter than Stark County in July. That inconsistency could point to a buildup in certain parts of your system.
